Section 1: Introduction
Lecture 1 01:54

Welcome back! You have finished Rhythm to Rock Lesson 1 and you are ready for Lesson 2. This lesson is the same format as the first. You will need your sticks, practice pad, music stand, computer and print outs of included pages. Before you begin working through this lesson, make sure you are comfortable playing Lesson 1. Each lesson builds on the previous lesson and so it is very important that you have mastered Lesson 1. In this lesson you will learn an exercise for the proper development of your hands and you will learn to read half notes. Are you ready to learn?

Section 2: Exercise 2 – Natural Lead Sticking
Lecture 2 03:04

Exercise 2 is designed to develop “Natural Lead Sticking” in your hands. When playing this way a drummer will always play on the strongest beats with the strongest hand. Right handed drummers will lead with their right hand while left handed drummers will lead with their left hand. This style of playing develops rhythmic precision and superior timing in the hands. Your drumming will have a flow. This exercise is only an introduction to the style of playing. Mastery of the style comes with time and practice which you will acquire throughout the Rhythm to Rock Lesson Series.

There are five more videos in this section. The last video is a summary for everyone to watch. The next four however are really only two videos. There are two for the right handed drummers and two for the left handed drummers (Video 2 and 2-2). The videos are the same just starting with different hands and the titles tell you which hands they are for. Which hand is your strong hand or writing hand? Are you left handed or right handed? Practice the videos that are for your strong hand. Most people are right handed but if you are left handed, then play the left handed videos. If you become very good at the videos for your strong hand and want to try the other handed videos for a challenge, by all means go ahead and try. The “other” handed video will help strengthen your weaker hand. It is most important that you play the two videos for your strong hand.

Make sure you download and print page 28 included below which has the exercise on it. Place the music on your stand and prepare to play. If you are right handed you should read the top set of stickings under each line (RLRLRLRL, R for right stick and L for left stick). Left handed drummers should read the second set of stickings under each line (LRLRLRLR). Make sure you always read the same line of stickings for each line of music even if it starts with your weak hand.

I have included two web links below where there are articles about Natural Lead Sticking, some call it the Straight System. Feel free to read the articles for more information about what the exercise teaches. Good luck with the exercise and remember to practice the exercise for a week after learning it.

Lecture 3 06:56

This video teaches you how to play exercise 2. The video is for RIGHThanded drummers. If you are left handed, you may play this video for a challenge but please play the left handed videos first before attempting this video.

Under each line you will see two lines if stickings: RLRLRL etc. R stands for right hand and L for left hand. You should play the first line of stickings under each line of music, or the top line of stickings. Lines 1-4 start with R and line 5 starts with a rest followed by L.

After working through this first video and before going on to the next video, try playing each line four times in a row (repeated) without stopping. This will prepare you for success in the next video, 2-2.

Lecture 4 06:34

This video teaches you how to play exercise 2. The video is for LEFThanded drummers. If you are right handed, you may play this video for a challenge but please play the right handed videos first before attempting this video.

Under each line you will see two lines if stickings: LRLRLRLR etc. R stands for right hand and L for left hand. You should play the second line of stickings under each line of music, or the bottom line of stickings. Lines 1-4 start with L and line 5 starts with a rest followed by R.

After working through this first video and before going on to the next video, try playing each line four times in a row (repeated) without stopping. This will prepare you for success in the next video, 2-2.

Lecture 5 05:34

This is part 2 for Right handed drummers.

This video teaches you how to play Exercise 2 as an exercise. You will be asked to play along with me. We will play each line of the exercise four times then go on to the next line four times and so on. You should play along with this video once every day for a week to get the most out of it. If you wish to add variety to your practicing, try any of the following:

  1. Play each line once and go on to the next line reading the exercise straight through.
  2. Play line 1, line 2, line 1, line 3, line 1, line 4, line 1, line 5, line 1 in that order without stopping. This is called Rondo Form and forces you to think fast while skipping lines.
  3. Play the opposite handed videos.

This exercise is VERY good for your hands. A week spent on this will help you advance quickly through the upcoming lessons.

Lecture 6 05:33
Lecture 7 02:41

This final video of the section talks about the different ways to practice the exercise. Before spending a week practicing the exercise, finish the entire course so that you can then practice all assignments in the course for one week. When you practice each day you should play exercise 2, etude 2 and possibly some of the reading examples as needed.

Section 3: Lesson 2: Reading Half Notes and Rests
Lecture 8 06:10

This is a whiteboard lecture lesson that explains what a half note is and how to read it. I also explain the half note rest. A half note looks like a quarter note except the note head is hollow. When a musician reads a half note, he/she knows to hold a sound for 2 beats or rest for 2 beats. Due to the short percussive sound of a drum, a half note sounds like a quarter note and therefore some alternative thinking is necessary to play half notes correctly on a drum. Watch this video carefully to learn how to read half notes and rests.

I have included a few web links that will help you understand half notes.

Make sure you download and print page 29 for the next video lesson.

Lecture 9 14:39

Place page 29 on your music stand and get ready to play. In this video we will play through the reading exercises lessons on page 29. You will learn how to play half notes and quarter notes together.

After working through this page, make sure you are comfortable with what you have learned. Repeat the video as needed until you feel like you are good at playing the lines of music. You may also play the page a few timeswithout the video for independent practice.

Mastery of this video will help you to be successful when learning to play Etude 2 in the next video.

Section 4: Lesson 2 Summary: Etude 2
Lecture 10 08:44

Download and print page 30 below. Place page 30 on your music stand. Before you start the video take a look at Etude 2. Notice that the time signature is 2/4. This means that each measure only has 2 beats in it instead of 4. I have included a link to some information about 2/4 time signature. There are two big differences for you in this etude. First you have to count to 2 over and over. Practice that by yourself, count 1,2,1,2,1,2,1,2,1,2,1,2,1,2 to a steady beat until you are comfortable with that. Second, the measure lines will happen every 2 beats. This can be visually distracting. As you play remember that measure lines do not indicate rests. Ignore the measure lines as you count and play.

Try playing Etude 2 by yourself BEFORE you work through the video. Follow these steps:

1.Begin with a slow beat speed.

2. Count yourself off-1, 2, 1, go

3. Play the etude for as far as you can, stopping to restart when you think you make a mistake.

4. Make sure you count to 2 out loud and go slow.

5. If you feel good about your read through, try playing it two more times before going on to the video lesson. If you have trouble go directly to the video.

The video teaches the etude. Work with the video for as long as it takes to learn the etude. Remember that the etudes serve to summarize what you learn in a lesson. By playing an etude correctly you show mastery of the entire lesson.

Section 5: Conclusion: Lesson 2 Wrap Up
Lecture 11 01:43

Congratulations, you have completed Rhythm to Rock Lesson 2. What next?

Make sure you spend at least one week practicing Exercise 2 and Etude 2. Learning to play a musical instrument requires muscle memory. Muscle memory comes from repetition. Repetition means doing something over and over. The more often you play the assignments in lesson 2, the more likely you will be to remember the skills for the rest of your life. When practicing this week be sure to play the exercise and the etude each 3 times in a row each time you practice. You may practice alone or with the videos. This process may take up to 15 minutes per practice session. Daily practice is recommended however every other day should be enough to maintain progress.
