You will not only be encouraged to collaborate amongst your peers, but also with other musicians, dancers and artists from across Trinity Laban and beyond. We foster an encouraging environment in which to learn and experiment with this extremely broad art form, equipping you with all the skills you’ll need as a working musician. As well as one-to-one tuition with experts in your specialism, you will form innovative ensembles, develop composition, musicology and critical listening skills, and receive expert advice and instruction from illustrious performers, composers and music industry professionals. A trumpeter with a flawless Grammy-winning classical technique, he is also a son of New Orleans and from his early work with Art Blakey he has delved back into jazz heritage to create playing and compositions that have won fans and plaudits all round the world. Maybe the most influential jazz musician of the second half of the 20th century was Miles Davis. He shed his musical skin more often than a snake, and so it is a difficult decision which of his many styles and periods to go for — but in the end it has to be the biggest selling jazz record of all time, Kind of Blue, and one of its signature tracks. One of the first black British jazz artists to make a serious mark on the jazz scene, some 30+ years on Courtney Pine CBE continues to break new ground.

Prime among them, Ella Fitzgerald could do almost anything with her flexible voice, perfect intonation and flawless diction. But here she duets with her one-time-lover Louis Jordan — who was himself one of the most accomplished interpreters of a song, as well as a pivotal figure in the launch of rhythm and blues with his jump-jive Tympany Five. A recent collaboration with MOBO award-winning ensemble Empirical, themselves Trinity Laban Jazz alumni, saw students and professionals alike experimenting with traditional and contemporary approaches to jazz. The energy and dynamism of these young musicians characterises our commitment to innovative performance. You’ll play with jazz musicians from all backgrounds, from raw talent to polished, and from progressive to purist. You’ll also benefit from working alongside students from other pathways, collaborating with producers, sound engineers, composers and entrepreneurs on your own independent projects.

Ensembles such as the RNCM Jazz Collective and Big Band provide opportunities to perform to public audiences throughout the year, with our Big Band regularly featuring distinguished guest artists.
