Sheffield is a creative city with a rich cultural heritage and thriving contemporary arts scene. Investigating the theory and practice of ‘cultural democracy’, this book explores a range of aesthetic forms including song, music, muralism, theatre, dance, and circus arts. This new fund builds on the work of the Arts Impact Fund, which was the first of its kind to focus on the social, artistic and financial return created by arts organisations. It provided repayable finance between £150,000 and £600,000 to arts organisations in England with ambitions to grow, achieve great artistic quality and have a positive impact on society.

In 2021 the MCA allocated £1m to the arts, culture and heritage sector in South Yorkshire. Down on the waterfront at Albert Dock is Tate Liverpool, the home of contemporary art in the North, staging major international exhibitions throughout the year. The Liverpool Empire Theatre is the second largest theatre in the country and showcases the best in local, national and international talent, often hosting shows direct from London’s West End. Liverpool’s Royal Court Theatre always guarantees a great night of entertainment, hosting great comedies and musicals throughout the year, with largely local casts and crews. The Everyman and Playhouse theatres provide an eclectic mix of forward-thinking theatre in great settings, with the Everyman being awarded the RIBA Stirling Prize in 2014 for best new building of the year.
