All students within Arts and Humanities can apply to spend a Term or Year Abroad as part of their degree at one of our partner universities in North America, Asia or Europe. You are expected to adhere to any progression requirements in Stage 1 and Stage 2 to proceed to the Term or Year Abroad. We will supply you with all of the necessary tools to have a successful career in the creative industries. Emilie first heard about Blokur during a Music Cultures and Economies lecture and reached out to them to ask for a week of work experience with the company. She was invited to do so and having wished the week wouldn’t come to an end, later reached out again to Blokur after University to apply for an internship, as she felt she wanted to see where the amazing projects would lead to. You also have the choice of whether to pursue a three-year degree with short work placement opportunities embedded, or to opt for four years and add a full year’s work placement between your second and final years of study.

In this module we will critically examine the role of IP and copyright in today’s music market. IP and copyright can cover works as diverse as songs, master recordings, videos, photos, writings, knowledge, the expression of ideas, prototypes, and more. This module is designed to provide students with a critical awareness of the various issues around IP and Copyright Management and additionally enable students to look critically at the contractual relationships that bind the industry.

Some areas covered include DIY strategies, social media, viral marketing, press and PR, blogging, online presence building, digital platforms, streaming playlists, creating low-budget music videos, merchandise and the role of advertising agencies. This module examines the digital revolution which has occurred in music, its key technologies and practices, and its impact on performers, consumers and the global music industry as a whole. Entrepreneurship, professional practice and transferable skills are essential attributes needed to develop and maintain a career in the music industry. The music business degree is managed and taught by industry professionals and practitioners with years of experience, across the key areas of the music industry. With close links to the industry, you’ll also benefit from guest lectures, seminars, workshops and have the opportunity to take part in masterclasses with industry experts such as managers and record label executives.

The course will equip you with excellent presentation, written and oral communication skills. Many education courses, some health science courses including Medicine, and some postgraduate business courses have an earlier start date. Students who started their course with us in 2021 are on campus for some face-to-face learning including tutorials, workshops, laboratory classes and studio sessions.

You will develop an understanding of a broader business context, too, focusing on planning and forecasting, financing, creativity and digital marketing. At Music Business School you will learn all of this, as well as how to source finance and investment for your artists, the essentials of a management agreement, and how to manage the numerous music rights that are part of the output of an artist. Our students come from throughout the UK, including London, to study at Music Business School. A wide range of international students have also benefited from our London based course. No matter where you are from, you’ll gain the knowledge you need to get you a foothold in the music business.

Study of entrepreneurship and innovation continues, and you’ll explore ideas and techniques to scope early-stage ventures. You’ll plan, organise, deliver, promote and monetise your own live events, and undertake digital promotional strategies, photo and video editing, and business pitches with support from digital distributor, The Orchard. To be a successful music entrepreneur, you need to have a clear understanding of the business, legal and economic roles and relationships which underpin the live music industry.

In addition, you should hold a relevant English language qualification equivalent to CEFR Level B2. You’ll learn all about the technologies involved in the broadcast and programming industries and how some of your favourite radio programming is made in this elective module. This module gives you the opportunity to become an accomplished storyteller, whether your intended output be media journalism or the lyrics of a song.

The teaching team, based at Perth College UHI, are all active in their disciplines and, as a result, have strong links with current employers in the music industries within the UK and further afield. These links enhance the educational experience, and provide a valuable insight into the contemporary music industries. You can extend your studies from three to four years by taking the Year in Industry option (this option is not available if you are studying on a part-time basis). This provides the opportunity to gain relevant workplace experience as part of your programme of study.
