Our relationships with jazz clubs across the city result in regular performance opportunities at exciting venues, such as Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club, Southbank Centre, the Pizza Express Jazz Club in Dean Street and the Vortex Jazz Club. It is not often one encounters an imagination with the depth and prolificacy of Jacob Collier’s. Born in 1994, the London-based singer and multi-instrumentalist is dubbed by many as one of the most innovative musicians of his generation.

She then went on to attend the Royal Academy of Music, also on scholarship, where, as an improviser and songwriter, she spent much of her time experimenting and collaborating beyond boundaries of any one genre. One of the finest and most productive of all female jazz instrumentalists, bandleaders and composers is Carla Bley. This ten-piece band toured in the 1980s and catches her iconoclastic reworking of gospel and big band jazz. Over on the West Coast, arranger and baritone saxophonist Gerry Mulligan — who’d worked with Miles Davis on the records that became known as Birth of the Cool – took “cool” jazz further than Miles had done.

The best live Traditional Jazz and Swing bands that we can find, playing for around two hours with a half-hour interval. As well as talks and tours specific to the courses you’re interested in, you can also chat to our staff and students. Our library and jazz archive contain over 10,000 CDs, 8,000 LPs and 18,000 items of printed music, and we’re an All-Steinway School, meaning that 95% of our pianos come from the Steinway family. At Trinity Laban, you will gain extensive experience in large ensembles, whether you’re playing classic jazz compositions in the Big Band or showcasing work by contemporary composers and Trinity Laban students in the Jazz Orchestra, led by Mark Lockheart and Laura Jurd. Concert highlights for Luft are performances with Django Bates, Arve Henriksen, Loose Tubes and Dinosaur, Laura Jurd’s jazz/rock quartet.

Students on the BMus programme can opt to undertake jazz electives within Academic Studies and Artist Development modules. These help you develop a knowledge of core jazz repertoire, understand how to approach improvisation, and explore the practical aspects of putting together a jazz performance. You’ll also receive specialist tuition from visiting artists and musicians prolific on the professional jazz scene which can include participation in masterclasses and performance projects. Recent visiting tutors include saxophonists Tim Garland, Bob Mintzer and Chris Potter, and vibraphonist Victor Mendoza. As the name suggests, we are well-known for our live jazz evenings, but this has now expanded to include the very best in musical talent from soul, funk, RnB and Motown bands to amazing DJ sets.

Following a remarkable sold-out UK debut at Brilliant Corners, we are delighted to announce Sélène Saint-Aimé Trio will be performing at Kings Place as part of the EFG London Jazz Festival. Alina Bzhezhinska returns to Kings Place with the HipHarpCollective to present her new album Reflections, a combination of Afro-harping, acid jazz, free-form experiment and Trip Hop. Renowned for his melodic and warmly lyrical trumpet playing, Chris Batchelor has been composing music for almost as long as he’s been performing, and will introduce Zoetic at Kings Place. Since their formation in 2007, Empirical have steadfastly maintained their position as one of the UK’s most exciting jazz ensembles.

Her Mercury-nominated band Dinosaur received a rare 5-star review in The Guardian and have extensively toured Europe. It’s vital that everyone has the freedom to explore their interest in and passion for jazz during their studies. Clowes’s band, My Iris , has toured worldwide and been hailed as ‘the jazz of the future’ . In 2019, Clowes premiered Joe Cutler’s saxophone concerto, Hawaii Hawaii Hawaii, with the BBC Concert Orchestra. Recent commissions include writing for the London Sinfonietta , BBC Concert Orchestra and Onyx Brass. Jazz incorporates african american musical influences with european musics techniques and music theory. Jazz is known for its use of blue notes, syncopation of rhythm and swing, call and response phrasing, polyrhythms and improvisation. Leeds Conservatoire Jazz student Eleni Olympiou reached the final of The Voice of Greece last year. We spoke to Eleni about her experience on the show, time at Leeds Conservatoire and future plans.
